Why transformer moves are surging
India's renewable build-out depends on new transmission corridors, and every corridor needs extra-high-voltage substations. GE Vernova alone has announced more than 70 units of 765 kV-class transformers and shunt reactors for POWERGRID's renewable corridors, made in Vadodara, with deliveries from 2026 through 2027 to Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Add 400 kV and 220 kV units for state utilities, industrial plants and data centres, and transformers are now among the most frequent heavy ODC loads on Indian highways.
The load profile
- Weight: large EHV units commonly run from 150 t to well over 300 t in transport condition — firmly OWC.
- Dimensions: 3.5–5 m wide and 4–5 m high in transport condition — ODC on width and often height.
- Condition: shipped with bushings, conservators and radiators removed, and the tank filled with dry nitrogen or dry air under positive pressure.
- Sensitivity: core and windings are vulnerable to shock, so an impact recorder rides with the tank.
Transformer transport inspection checklist
- Nitrogen / dry-air pressure gauge reading photographed at loading, at checkpoints and on arrival.
- Impact recorder fitted, switched on and its serial number recorded; readout captured at destination.
- Hydraulic trailer axle lines and HT composition matching the permit; deck levelled.
- Lifting and jacking pads used — never the tank walls; saddles and timber under the designated support points.
- Lashing to the manufacturer's lashing lugs only, with chain/wire count and angles recorded.
- Route survey: overhead lines, flyovers, toll gantries, bridge capacity and turning radii.
- Unloading: crane or jack-and-slide capacity versus weight, plinth readiness and closure photos.

How ODC OK PLEASE helps on transformer jobs
The AI reads the manufacturer's dispatch documents, eWay Bill and LR, pulls out weight and dimensions, and the rules engine immediately raises the ODC and OWC softlocks with plain-language reasons. The maker adds the gauge and impact-recorder photos, all geo-tagged, and the lashing block computes total MSL from the chain and wire counts. The checker sees everything in one screen and signs the insurer-ready report. Book a demo to walk through a transformer job.

Frequently asked questions
Why are transformers shipped with nitrogen?
Removing the oil reduces weight for transport; dry nitrogen or dry air under slight positive pressure keeps moisture out of the insulation. The gauge reading is key inspection evidence.
What trailer is used for a 765 kV transformer in India?
Usually a modular hydraulic axle trailer configured to one of MoRTH's HT compositions so that no axle row carries more than 18 t.
What is an impact recorder?
A device mounted on the tank that logs shocks during transit. Its readout at destination shows whether the unit was subjected to accelerations beyond the manufacturer's limits.
